Silicone gel-filled implants are medical devices. The FDA (US food and drug administration) evaluates these devices and must be satisfied that they are safe for use in the long term. Extensive research is needed in order to satisfy the committee’s requirements that the product is of high quality, safety and efficacy.

What does this approval mean for women wanting breast implants?

There has been controversy in recent years over safety of silicone used in breast implants. The FDA’s approval means that there is no evidence to suggest the silicone used in implants is toxic to humans and that women with silicone breast implants are no more likely to develop cancer, immunologic diseases or neurological problems, than the rest of the population. It also means that there was no evidence to suggest that women with implants had a higher risk of breast cancer. |
