before after Hair loss is a problem frequently affecting men all around the world, from their late teenage years through to old age. A plastic surgical solution is now available, making use of an individual’s own hair in the form of a hair transplant. The transplanted hair follicle grows in an ordinary manner and the hair transplant procedure will lead to new hair growth within two to three months after its conclusion. The new hair can be combed, washed, cut and shaped as usual. The procedure involves harvesting a portion of skin from one’s own donor site and dividing it into mini and micro-grafts enclosing two to five hair follicles per graft. These grafts are then transplanted into the scalp in the pre-planned distribution. The duration of the procedure is between two to three hours, and the surgery is performed under conscious sedation with local anaesthetic infiltration, on a day-basis. The recovery is usually rapid and without incident. Swelling reaches a peak at 36 to 48 hours after the surgery and could spread to the forehead and occasionally to the upper part of the face. Pain is minimal and painkillers are rarely required.* The patient will be able to return to the work schedule and social activities within two to four days of the procedure.
